Storm Tips: How to Prepare for Power LossSeptember 1, 2016
If you live or own real estate in Destin, then you know that on occasion storms will roll through the Gulf Coast. In some areas, there may be a loss of power due to a damaged power line. The response teams in this area are amazing, but it is always best to be prepared. If a storm is on the way, here are a few tips to help you in case you lose power.
Stock up. In the event of a power outage, you will need to have a supply of ice, water, batteries, and flashlights. One gallon of water per day per person is recommended. Also, fill your automobiles and any generators you have with gas. Try to get enough supplies to last two weeks. Even if your power is restored, it may take a while for stores to restock.
Unplug. During the storm, make sure that all electronics and appliances are unplugged. If you see a downed power line or any type of damaged electronics, do not touch them for any reason.
Wait. After the storm, response teams immediately begin restoring power to affected areas. However, it might take a few days to get to everyone. Books and board games are a great way to pass the time. If you do lose power for more than two hours, you will need to cook or ice down any perishable items in your refrigerator.
